Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate from Maine, is denying allegations from several ex-girlfriends who claim he was physically abusive and boasted about having a Nazi-like tattoo. According to an interview with The New York Times, the women recounted various episodes, including one where Platner allegedly twisted an arm and shoved a woman into a bedroom. Another ex-girlfriend claimed Platner, a combat veteran, fantasized about killing perceived threats and said he would rape home intruders.
Platner, who is running against incumbent Republican Susan Collins, denied all allegations of physical abuse in an interview with MS NOW. He also denied knowing his tattoo was associated with the Nazi SS, stating he got it during a drunken night with fellow Marines in 2007 and recently covered it up.
Platner's campaign has been mired in controversy, including past Reddit posts with racist and offensive comments. He attributed these to PTSD and depression following combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Platner acknowledged his struggles with mental health and drinking, but emphasized his commitment to change, saying, "I don’t want you to judge me on the dumbest thing I ever wrote on the internet. I would prefer if people could judge me on the person I am today."
Despite the controversies, Platner's candidacy has gained traction among voters seeking a fresh voice. He is set to face Collins in the upcoming election, with control of the Senate at stake.
