The teenager accused of killing 17 people at a Florida high school might have to give up his court-appointed defense attorney. The public defender in Broward County is asking the judge to determine whether Nikolas Cruz stands to inherit a large sum of money from his late parents. There are reports the couple who adopted Cruz had an estate worth $800,000. Roger Cruz died in 2004 and Lynda Cruz died suddenly of pneumonia last November.
If it turns out the 19-year-old is entitled to inherit the money, he might be ordered to pay for his own defense attorney.
